Mentorship - why it matters & how it has helped my career
When I was in law school an upper year made a joke that I collect mentors like they're coins in a game.

When I started law school during the pandemic, it was overwhelming and very lonely. The social part was gone and I was very confused if I was doing this whole thing “right”. In hindsight there’s no way to do it “right” but having a blueprint and mentors to get advice a) helps guide you and b) reinforces you’re on the right path or how to make adjustments and pivot. Having mentors has helped me critique and pivot sooner. This has helped me in both law and in entrepreneurship.
My favourite mentor story: It’s hard to pick. Without disclosing their name, this mentor has given me many nuggets in a short amount of time of knowing them. One being, “meet as many people as you can. Every day, try to meet a new person.” Along with “there’s a reason god gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth. Listen more.” mic drop. This one really clicked for me. You learn more when you let someone else speak.
This mentor has changed my life. They have always caught me when I say something negative or pursue negative self-talk. They catch me and get me to undo that thought. Second, I’v learned to think of the big picture and move on from events and outcomes that don’t matter that are holding you back. Super vague, I know. But I credit this mentor for remembering to dream big again in life.
The hardest part: When the list of mentors grows, keeping in touch with them is huge. For there to be a mentorship bond, you have to keep a feedback loop for them to actually be a mentor. So update them! Reach out when they’ve crossed your mind. Don’t be someone that only reaches out when you need something. Wish them happy birthday, happy new year, etc. It goes a long way.
Stay organized - have a reoccurring list of people you professionally would like to keep in touch with. Take stock of it often and make changes as needed. Business school taught me to add these people on LinkedIn but the old school approach, grab a coffee with these people maybe every 6 months or give them a call is far more meaningful. Sometimes, depending on the situation, sending a text/message with any updates is helpful too, although face to face is always better.
Some of the mentors I’m forever grateful to for getting me to this position today: Bobby, Michael, Ricco, Raju, Dr Shorter & Rehan.
